To set up H5P.com in Brightspace using LTI Advantage (or LTI 1.3), you need to first:
Part 1: Add Brightspace as a "tool consumer" in H5P.com
Step 1: Log in to H5P.com as an admin user with your e-mail address as the username and enter your password.
Step 2: Go to Manage Organization
Step 3: Go to "Connect LMS"
Step 4: Select your LMS. Fill in "Brightspace" or something similar in the Connection name field, choose LTI v1.3, and click "Save".
Note: If you want to use LTI v1.1, please follow this tutorial
Make note of the following information provided on H5P.com: these are the connection details and look something like this:
- Login URL: https://yourorganization.h5p.com/lti/login
- Redirect URL: https://yourorganization.h5p.com/lti/launch
- Public key: https://yourorganization.h5p.com/lti/jwks/numbers.json
You’ll be needing these in the next section.
Important: Please, do not copy and paste the information above, it won't work, as it has been edited and are not the actual details you must use. You need to copy the valid values from inside H5P.com as they are personally and randomly generated. It looks something like the image below:
Part 2: Make sure you have the needed permissions
Step 1: Log in to Brightspace as an administrator
Step 2: In the admin menu, choose “Roles and Permissions”
Step 3: Click the "Edit permissions" option next to the role
Step 4: Select "External learning tools" from the menu above and check "Manage LTI Advantage Tool Registrations" and "Manage LTI Advantage Tool Deployments"
Part 3: Add H5P.com as an LTI 1.3 tool in Brightspace
Step 1: Log in to Brightspace as an administrator
Step 2: In the admin menu, choose or search for “Manage Extensibility”
Step 3:
- Select “LTI Advantage”
- Press the “Register Tool” button
If you see the question "How would you like to register your tool?", choose standard.
Step 4: Fill in the form like this:
- Choose the Standard registration method.
- Fill in a "Name".
- In "Domain," enter the root URL for your organization, e.g., https://yourorganization.h5p.com, and for the redirect URLs, paste the URL endpoint that you copied from h5p.com previously.
- In the “OpenID Connect Login URL”, type in the redirect URL, but replace “launch” with “login”. E.g. https://yourorganization.h5p.com/lti/login.
- For the “Keyset URL”, paste the “Public Key” URL that you copied from H5P.com.
- Under the extensions label, check “Assignment and Grade Services”.
- Finally, click the “Register” button.
Take note of the “Client ID”, “Brightspace Keyset URL”, “OpenID Connect Authentication Endpoint”, and “Issuer” fields that you are presented with when registering. (You can always edit the tool to see these URLs)
Now go back to the H5P.com tab.
Step 5:
- Click the “Connection settings” button for the connection that you previously created.
- In “Client ID”, fill in the “Client ID” that you just got.
- For the “Issuer” field, fill in the “Issuer” you just got.
- For “Login URL”, fill in the “OpenID Connect Authentication Endpoint”.
- For “Key Set URL”, fill in the “Brightspace Keyset URL”.
Now, go back to the Brightspace tab.
Step 6:
- While viewing the new tool, scroll down and click the “View Deployments” button/link at the very bottom of the page.
- Click the “New Deployment” button.
Step 7:
- In the form, select the name of the tool you just created from the “Tool” dropdown.
- Choose a name for the Tool.
- Under the “Security settings” label, check the “User Information” box.
- Make the tool available to the placements that you wish through the “Add org units” button.
- Finally, press the “Create Deployment” button.
Step 8:
- Copy the “Deployment ID” that you’re presented with.
- Go back to the H5P.com tab.
- Press the “New Deployment” button for your connection.
- Paste in the “Deployment ID” and click “Save”.
Step 9:
- Click the deployment you created in Brightspace, and the form will show again.
- Scroll to the bottom and click the "View Links" button that will be showing there now
- On the "Links" page, click the "New Link" button.
- Type in a name for your link. This is the name that will show when inserting LTI content in a course
- For "URL" type in the login URL, e.g., https://yourorganization.h5p.com/lti/login (replace with your organization)
- And finally, for type, choose "Deep Linking Insert Stuff". (Another option is to choose "Deep Linking Quicklink". Then H5P will appear in the "Existing Activities" dropdown inside Brightspace.
- Save the form.
You now have a working deployment for the places where you allowed the deployment to be used through the “Add org units” button for the deployment. You can, e.g., insert content by going to a course -> “Create an assignment” -> click the “Insert stuff” button in the WYSIWYG and select your tool by the name you gave it.
Part 4: Verify that it works
Everything is now set up. To make sure that it works, we're going to add an H5P to a discussion.
Step 1: Log in as an instructor.
Step 2: Go to a course that you made H5P available for in Part 3, Step 4.
Step 3: If you don't have a unit, click on + New Unit.
Step 4: Within the new Unit, click on Create New.
Step 5: Create a new Page.
Step 7: Select the H5P tool (you probably have to scroll down)
Step 6: You may choose between creating new content or picking from your existing content. Then click on Insert.
Note: Do note that you may resize the pop-up that appears using the bottom left corner.
Step 7: Right after inserting the H5P, you can choose if the H5P should or shouldn't be a graded item. This would mean that the H5Ps will or will not send a score to the gradebook.
Note: The above is only relevant for the New Learner Experience.
Step 8: Since we've made it a gradable item, we'll also make sure that grading works, so create a quiz or another type of H5P activity that provides a final score
Step 9: Log in as a student and complete the scoreable activity
Step 10: Log back in as an instructor or admin and go to grades in the course you're using for testing. You should see the student's score there.
Enjoy using H5P in Brightspace!
