Highlights
The new content look and feel is now available!
We’re excited to introduce a modern, accessible, and flexible design for H5P content that makes learning more engaging and intuitive.
Learners will enjoy cleaner layouts, improved typography, and more consistent interactions across content types, while institutions gain new ways to tailor the experience.
With preset themes - or the ability to create custom ones - organizations can align content with their brand, while automatic color contrast adjustments ensure all themes meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards. Density settings let you fine-tune spacing to improve readability and focus for learners.
When the new look and feel is enabled, your chosen theme and density settings are applied automatically across the organization, updating all existing supported content to reflect your preferences.
Authoring remains unchanged: workflows, editors, and content behavior continue to function the same way as before.
The new look and feel is available for Interactive Book and all the content types that can be used within it.
Refer more about what is new and the list of supported content types in this launch here.
Activating the new look and feel
The new look and feel can be enabled and managed from http://H5P.com and also applies to H5P content in LMS platforms supported via LTI or embedded by URL.
Only users with the H5P Admin role can turn it on or adjust settings; it cannot be enabled directly from within an LMS. This ensures that themes, spacing, and visibility are applied consistently across all content, while giving admins control to preview and roll out the update safely.
H5P Admins can manage the new look and feel by navigating to:
Settings → Manage Organization → Content Look & Feel
Visibility Options
These settings allow you to safely preview, test, and gradually roll out the new look and feel:
Off (default)
The new look and feel is disabled for all users. Content continues to display using the existing design.
Admins only (recommended for testing)
The new look and feel is visible only to administrators. This mode is ideal for previewing changes, validating layouts, and reviewing any custom CSS before exposing the update to learners.
Everyone
The new look and feel is enabled for all learners and authors across supported content.
Defaults and behavior
Existing accounts: Default to Off, giving admins full control during a transition period to preview and enable the new look and feel. The update will eventually become the default, with the switchover date clearly communicated in advance, so you have plenty of time to plan and transition with confidence. Admins are encouraged to explore and enable the update early to familiarize themselves and learners of the refreshed design.
New accounts created after launch: The new look and feel is enabled by default and applied permanently for all supported content. The learners immediately benefit from the refreshed, modern design, improved readability, and consistent interactions.
Refer more details around how to self activate the new look and feel for your organisation here.
Managing Custom CSS
Custom CSS remains supported on http://H5P.com. However, existing custom CSS may conflict with the new look and feel.
Admins are encouraged to:
Use “Admins only” visibility to preview changes
Review and update custom CSS before enabling the new look and feel for everyone.
More details and step by step guidelines are available here.
FAQ
Q: Does this change how I author content?
A: No. Authoring workflows, editors, and content behavior remain unchanged. Some WYSIWYG editors—such as for Drag Question, Interactive Video, Course Presentation and Layout Builder—have been updated visually to align with the new design, but their functionality remains the same.
Q: Is the new look and feel enabled automatically?
A: For existing accounts, it defaults to Off and can be enabled by admins at any time. New accounts created after launch have it enabled permanently for all supported content.
Q: Can I customize the look and feel?
A: Yes. Admins can choose from preset themes or create custom themes, and adjust spacing with density settings. Note, when the new look and feel is enabled, your chosen theme and density settings are applied automatically across the organization, updating all existing supported content to reflect your preferences.
Q: Can I preview it before rolling it out to learners?
A: Yes. Use the “Admins only” visibility setting to preview and test safely.
Q: Will existing content update automatically?
A: Yes. When the new look and feel is enabled, all supported content will reflect the refreshed design.
Q: Are plugins supported in this release?
A: Yes, Moodle and Wordpress plugins are supported in this release.
Q: What about content types not yet upgraded?
A: Remaining content types will be updated gradually after this launch. Until then, upgraded content uses the new look and feel, while other content retains the old design. We’ll notify you whenever a new content type becomes available with the new design.
Q: Will the new look and feel become mandatory?
A: Yes. After all content types are upgraded, the new look and feel will become the default for all accounts. The automatic switchover date will be communicated in advance so admins have time to plan and prepare.
Q: How will content appear while some content types are not yet upgraded?
A: Until all content types are upgraded, upgraded content will display the new look and feel, while any content that hasn’t been updated will continue to show the legacy design. Live engagement content types such as The Chase and Multipoll have an intentionally unique style that does not need to be updated. Therefore these content types will remain in their original design.
Q: Will third-party or non-recommended content types get the new look and feel?
A: Yes. All content types on http://H5P.com , including third-party and non-recommended types, will eventually be upgraded to the new look and feel.
Additional Canvas improvements
Canvas is introducing a requirement that all API requests must include a User-Agent header. This will be enforced on:
- Canvas Beta: already active since October 1, 2025
- Canvas Production: effective March 21, 2026
We had previously added User-Agent header to some requests sent to Canvas, but with this update, our Canvas integration now automatically includes a descriptive User-Agent header with all requests. No action is required from customers.
Hotfixes since last release
