Layout Builder is the new tool in H5P for creating Pages (formerly called Columns) and Interactive Books, deepening the authoring experience by making it more responsive, accessible, and flexible, thanks to its multi-column layout and drag-and-drop interface.
This exciting feature gives you more control and a more dynamic authoring experience, helping you build faster and better learning material for your students.
Here are a few things authors can now do:
- Build content with up to four columns in a row
- Easily add, reposition, and resize content blocks
- Navigate and arrange elements via keyboard or mouse
- See real-time layout changes as you edit

We'll divide this guide into the following topics:
Who will get this update?
The Layout Builder will only be available to Premium users in H5P.com (including free 30-day trial accounts). This also applies to LMS access via the LTI, as long as you have a Premium subscription.
However, all customers (non-premium too) will be able to create content in Pages (formerly called Column) and Interactive Books, but will continue to use the already existing form-based editor without the enhanced visual experience.
What does this feature look like?
Below, we show how you can start creating various layouts based on columns and add rows, columns, and content into a flexible and responsive layout.
And here is what the Layout Builder editor will look like.

FAQs
Q: Which content types support the new Layout Builder?
A: The new layout builder is only available for Pages (previously called Column) and Interactive Book.
Q: Will the Layout Builder affect existing H5P content?
A: No, all existing content will continue to work as expected after the release. This will mean that new and existing H5Ps will work with either the new Layout Builder editor or the H5P form-based editor.
Q: Can I still edit content types without the Layout Builder?
A: Yes, we will still support everything you do today. With this improvement, we are also changing how you create and edit Pages and Interactive Books without the Layout Builder. This means that you will still be able to add multi-column layouts without the Layout Builder, but this experience will be more limited. The biggest change is that Premium customers will receive an improved editing experience with the Layout Builder, giving them access to the most advanced editing tool available with H5P. See the image below on how editing Pages and Interactive Books without the Layout Builder will appear.
