Cookies are essential for authors to log in to H5P and create content. On the other hand, learners do not require cookies to access and engage with H5P content.
Using H5P through an LMS with an LTI integration will give it the status of a "third party", meaning it might get blocked depending on the browser's settings. While authors rely on cookies, students shouldn't need them to enjoy H5P content within the LMS, unless they're using our Drill-Down Reports.
When using Drill-Down Reports
For organizations with Drill-Down reporting, H5P will gather student data. This means that each student viewing H5P content receives a user account on h5p.com (provided there are available learner seats), containing information like first name, last name, and email (based on LMS connection settings). Additionally, student responses, number of attempts, and submissions are stored to help teachers review individual students' attempts.
Changing cookie settings on your browser
When experiencing cookie-related issues, it could be beneficial to check on solutions provided by the web browser or device. For example, certain browsers allow the blocking of specific cookies, meaning that users can opt to allow cookies only from h5p.com while blocking others.
We recommend checking browser and device settings and adjusting them to give the best and seamless H5P experience. These resources might be of help:
- Cookie settings on Chrome.
- Cookie settings on Firefox.
- Cookie settings on Safari.
- Cookie settings on Edge.
It may also be beneficial to stay up to date with H5P's announcements, since there might be changes related to our cookie requirements.
Possible challenges in the future
H5P currently depends on cookies for optimal functioning. However, since the use of cookies and browser policies might evolve in the future, we may need to look into different solutions.
